These flaky, cheesy, and golden Cheese Stars are the perfect savory treat for parties or as a snack. Made with smoked cheddar and a hint of celery salt and ginger, they’re rich in flavor and easy to make. Enjoy them fresh out of the oven or make them ahead for busy days.

Ingredients Needed:

  • 200 grams grated smoked cheddar or other strong Cheddar
  • 50 grams of soft unsalted butter
  • 100 grams plain flour (plus extra for rolling)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon celery salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger

How To Make Cheese Stars?

  1. Prepare the Dough: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Add all the ingredients to a food processor and blend until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two flat discs, wrap in cling film, and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  2. Roll and Cut: Roll out the first disc on a lightly floured surface to about 3mm thick. Use a star-shaped cutter to cut out the stars. Re-roll any leftover dough to make more stars.
  3. Bake the Stars: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, place the stars on top, and bake for 12-15 minutes until puffed and golden. Repeat with the second batch of dough.
  4. Cool and Serve: Once baked, transfer the stars to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.

Recipe Tips:

  • Choose Strong Cheese: Use a sharp or smoked cheddar for the best flavor. Avoid mild cheeses, as they won’t give the stars enough taste.
  • Roll Evenly: Roll the dough evenly to ensure all stars bake at the same rate.
  • Don’t Overwork the Dough: Handle the dough gently to keep the stars light and flaky.
  • Shape Straight From the Fridge: Chilled dough is easier to roll and cut, making it less sticky.
  • Test for Golden Color: Keep an eye on the stars while baking. They’re ready when puffed and lightly golden.

How To Store Leftovers?

  • Refrigerate: These stars don’t need refrigeration. Store the baked stars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze: Allow the baked stars to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.
